Kerala Police to launch ‘WhatsApp Commissioner’ programme


Trivandrum: In an effort to bring policing to the doorsteps of the people using a digital avenue, the Kerala Police has proposed to start a new programme called ‘WhatsApp Commissioner’, under which the app will be available in the numbers of all the District SPs under the Thiruvananthapuram Range and with the IGP. Members of the public using this application can send information through text, audio, pictures and videos on any issue of public interest.

According to Manoj Abraham IPS, IGP – Police HQ, Thiruvananthapuram, “The WhatsApp application on smartphones can be used as a very useful tool for the police in getting or sharing information from /with the public. The ease in sending text, audio, photos and videos on this application can help the police in detecting various cases and in tracking criminals. It is proposed to start this facility from April 05, 2014.”

Public using ‘WhatsApp Commissioner’can send information on any issue of public interest, which can be broadly classified as – Complaints on traffic violations, accidents, traffic jams, etc; Complaints of Police high handedness / corruption; Complaints of illegal activities; Complaints against anti-socials of the locality; Complaints on drugs/ abkari and related offences; Information on criminals; and Matters of public interest.

The message with pictures / videos can be sent to the following numbers based on jurisdiction and a copy can be marked to IGP Thiruvananthapuram Range for information.

“We undertake that all the information received over this medium will be kept confidential and the source will be protected. A system should be devised to ensure that all the credible information is acted upon also”, he added.

The ‘WhatsApp Commissioner’facility is expected to be widely used in the coming days for receiving complaints of crowding near the booths, law and order problems, model code violations, etc, during the election process.
