Kerala University campuses turn e-campuses with Wi-Fi rollout


Trivandrum: The capital city based University of Kerala has commissioned a high-speed Wi-Fi network at its campuses at Palayam and Karyavattom. The implementation will help the students connect to the Internet and Intranet through wireless network from anywhere inside the University campus and be able to access the information in a secured manner.

University employees, students and guests will have shared access to wireless network resources to support the University’s mission of teaching, research, and outreach. The rollout of this Wi-Fi network is expected to benefit hundreds of students, teachers, researchers, and administrative personnel who will be able to connect with a laptop or other wireless / handheld device.

According to a release from Kerala University, access would be free to the one GB network which can be accessed through about 70 Wireless Access Points (can be extended to 100 points) set up on the University campuses. There are 27 access points at the Palayam campus and 43 access points at the Kariavattom campus. Both the Wi-Fi networks have a capacity to support up to 4,000 simultaneous users.

Research scholars could access this network free of charge for the tenure of their research. The wireless network had been so envisaged as to be utilised for the conduct of seminars, symposiums, and science congresses.

The network management centre has been set up at the Computer Centre building in the Palayam Campus and the Webcasting centre at the Kariavattom campus.

The Kerala University Computer Centre (KUCC) which serves as a hub for IT related services on the campus has implemented the Wi-Fi network that has transformed the University campus into a Wi-Fi enabled e-campus. KUCC supports the University wide one Gbps fibre optic network that connects all the academic departments, hostels, libraries, building blocks and other central facilities. The Computer centre provides e-campus facility comprising of Internet, open for 24×7 with a high speed and uninterrupted connectivity. Department laboratories, hostels and libraries are provided computing facilities through the wired Gigabit LAN connectivity and Wireless Access Points.
