Kerala to organize first-ever Road Safety Hackathon in the country


Trivandrum: The Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA) and the Transport Department in association with the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and AXA Insurance, will organize a two-day Hackathon event on August 22 & 23 at the Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, to support various road safety interventions and initiatives undertaken by the concerned departments.

This Hackathon will be a non-stop (24-36 hours) coding event, in which computer programmers and others involved in software and hardware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively to develop innovative solutions (software programmes / applications) or product ideas for Road Safety.

The Kerala Road Safety Hackathon will be the first of its kind in a World Series and expects participation of 125 to 150 talented developers, entrepreneurs and students from all over India.

Announcing the event, R Sreelekha IPS, Transport & Road Safety Commissioner said, “It’s just novel solutions from a group of talented minds to create a product for road safety, which could be used anywhere in the world.”

Arnab Bandyopdhyay, Senior Transport Specialist, World Bank said the event funded by the Bank would be held across the world. Kerala was selected for the first event as it was the only State in the country with a road safety authority. The formation of the authority was helpful in bringing down accident cases in the State.”

The hackathon expects developers to either create software or hardware based programs or applications that will help improve road safety in four critical areas (i) Engineering (ii) Enforcement (iii) Education and (iv) Emergency care management or post-crash management.

The winning teams will be awarded with cash prize of Rs. 1,90,000/- each for Hardware and Software solutions, and the runner-ups will get Rs. 95,000/- each. The winning teams will be given 3-6 months for maturation of their programme / product.

There will an Ideation Contest for the non-technical category which is an opportunity for the general public to send their ideas / solutions for road safety in Kerala. Selected ideas will be awarded cash prizes. The ideas and suggestion should be limited to 350 words and sent to grsh.kerala @
