Google iBus criss-crosses Kerala


Thrissur: The Google Internet Bus is in Thrissur today. The bus which reached Kerala on December 05, 2009 has covered four major cities so far and will cover another four in the next ten days or so.


The Internet Bus Project is an initiative by Google to educate people about what the Internet is, and how it may be beneficial to their lives, by taking the Internet experience to them through a customised Internet enabled bus, which travels to several towns and cities across India. In the last four months since it was introduced in India, the Internet Bus has covered 10604 kms till date having criss-crossed Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka before entering Kerala.


In the last two weeks, hundreds visited the bus at Kochi / Ernakulam, Allapuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. It will spend another day in Thrissur before proceeding to Palakkad (Dec. 21 & 22), Kozhikode (Dec. 23 – 25) and Thalassery (Dec. 26 & 27). The bus is focusing on four themes – Information, Communication, Entertainment and Education and showcase informative content in both English and Malayalam to provide users an understanding of how internet can be used.


The Google Map Maker team members are also part of this Internet Bus to show people how to create maps of their local villages and towns. Visitor to the bus were able to view their home and neighbourhood and use Google Map Maker to map their home towns and favourite destinations.
