Tvm: In what can be seen as an immediate outcome of the first ever Executive Council meeting of Nasscom in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday, Aegis, the leading Business Process Outsourcing company has announced its intentions to set up a centre in Kerala. Aparup Sengupta, MD & Global CEO, Aegis announced this in Trivandrum today, during an interaction of Nasscom officials with the media. Aegis is wholly owned by the Essar Group, a US$16 billion conglomerate and has more than 50,000 employees across 50 locations world wide.
The centre will come up in Trivandrum and would employee a sizeable number. “The visit to Kerala was a real eye opener and the IT infrastructure here is really impressive. That’s the reason we have decided to start a centre here. Further details needs to be worked out”, Aparup added.
Briefing the media about the Executive Council meeting, Rajendra S Pawar, Chairman, Nasscom said that Kerala had the potential to become a major IT-BPO destination but needs to aggressively market itself. The success which Kerala achieved in the tourism sector can be repeated in the IT sector as well, by harnessing its inherent strength like literacy and connectivity. He also announced the opening of the Nasscom regional chapter in Kerala at the Technopark in Trivandrum.
Som Mittal, President, Nasscom said that Nasscom expects a 16-18 percent growth rate of the Indian IT industry this year irrespective of the tribulations overseas as the private sector is doing well and all the emerging markets are growing faster than developed markets. Although the deal sizes have shrunk in size, the volumes are being maintained.
Nasscom, the National Association of Software and Services Companies, membership base of 1,300 IT / ITeS companies accounts for almost 90% of the industry revenues in India and employs over 2.24 million professionals. Of the 300 odd IT / ITeS companies in Kerala, 27 are members of Nasscom.
