Malappuram bags State School IT Mela 2013 championship


Trivandrum: Malappuram District has bagged the overall championship at the 11th edition of the Kerala State School IT Mela which was held in Technopark yesterday. Malappuram took the lead with 105 points while Kozhikode was the first runner up with 84 points, followed by Thrissur with 73 points. This year, the individual prize money was doubled to Rs.2,000, Rs.1,600 and Rs.1,200 for the first, second and third positions.

School wise, P K M M HSS, Edarikkode (Malappuram District) came first in the High School category and M D S HSS, Kottayam came first in the Higher Secondary School / Vocational Higher Secondary School category. Various competitions like Digital Painting, Malayalam Typing, IT Project, Web Page Designing, Multimedia presentations and IT Quiz were held in these two categories on FOSS based software.

Earlier, the day long IT fest was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy in the presence of Minister for Education, Shri P K Abdu Rabb and Minster for Industries & IT, Shri P K Kunhalikutty.

In his address, the Chief Minister said the State was yet to tap the full potential of ICT enabled education and promised the government’s support for IT education and IT related development in schools. “Although we lead the country in literacy, we missed the IT revolution because of the opposition to computerisation and IT implementation. But we cannot afford to do that now. IT educated youths should be job creators and not job seekers. The mindset of people should change and students should be encouraged to be entrepreneurs”, he added.

In his address, the IT Minister said that the IT fest was a platform for the students to use and showcase IT as a tool for education and development.

About 500 students from across the State, who were the first and second prize winners of the District level school IT Mela, participated in the State School IT Mela 2013. The IT@School team organised the IT Fest for the General Education Department.
