Dubai: The inauguration of the much delayed Rs. 2,000 crores SmartCity Kochi project being promoted by the Dubai based TECOM Investments will be held towards the end of February. This was announced by the Minister for Industries & IT, Shri P K Kunhalikutty after a Board of Directors meeting of SmartCity Kochi today in Dubai.
“The inauguration of the first IT building will take place in the last week of February and the exact date will be finalised in a week’s time”, the Minister said.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister, Shri Oommen Chandy had, in September 2015, announced after a similar Board meeting in Kochi that the inauguration of the first IT building will be held in mid December. A convenient date was to be decided mutually by SmartCity Kochi, TECOM and Kerala Government but this never happened.
Dr. Baju George, MD of SmartCity Kochi said, “The inauguration of the first phase and the laying of the foundation stone for the second phase will take place on the same day. The second phase would have buildings with built-up area of 47 lakhs sq. ft.”
The inauguration of the much hyped SmartCity Kochi project has been put off several times in the last one year.
Earlier in September 2015, Tecom had cited lack of support from the State Government’s IT Department headed by Principal Secretary, P H Kurian. According to sources, the promoters were neither happy about the alleged inaction on the part of the IT department in ironing out issues pointed out by them to speed up the project nor about the IT Secretary’s stance on actions against a former employee who had resigned from the company.
