Trivandrum: Kerala’s pioneering e-governance project for school students, IT@School, in association with BSNL, has facilitated Wi-Fi enabled Broadband Internet to all Lower Primary and Upper Primary schools in the State. From November 1, 2016 onwards, as many as 10,000 Lower Primary and Upper Primary Government and Aided schools across Kerala would start getting 2Mbps broadband Internet with unlimited data usage.
Minister for Education, Prof. Ravindranath said, “This step would be the starting of IT infrastructure upgradation in the Primary section, as a continuation to the High Tech school programme through which all classes of Standard 8 to 12 are being upgraded using modern ICT tools”.
“IT@School Project has been providing broadband internet connection to close to 5,000 schools and educational offices from 2007 onwards. With the addition of Primary section also, the State’s school Internet network with 100% coverage and over 15,000 connections would be the largest of its kind in the Country”, said K Anvar Sadath, Executive Director of IT@School Project.
The Broadband modem issued to the schools will be connected to the School Computer Lab. Internet will be made available to all computers in the Lab through proper and effective networking. Schools which do not have a Computer Lab facility would connect the broadband modem either in the Multimedia Classroom or at the Office room where a computer is available. Schools authorities should ensure the security of the Wi-Fi network through a strong password protection, to avoid any misuse. The broadband connectivity provided to the school should only be used for its academic and administrative purposes. The school authorities have to ensure that no additional software or applications are installed in the computer in which the internet is made available. IT@School would be implementing an E-Monitoring mechanism and specific training to ensure the safe and secure use of internet provided to the schools and also to gauge its usage and effectiveness at regular intervals.
BSNL would complete the installation of broadband connections before March 31, 2016. BSNL is also coming up with a unique web portal and call centre facility for addressing the issues pertaining to the internet connectivity given to the schools.
