Trivandrum: Public sector telecom service provider, BSNL has tied up with Cable TV service providers across Kerala to provide very high-speed broadband Internet service (up to 100 Mbps) to subscribers through Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology. This was disclosed by Dr. P T Mathew, Chief General Manager of BSNL Kerala Circle while addressing a press conference today.
“We have signed MoU with 40 Cable TV operators across Kerala, in the first phase, as part of extending our FTTH services to the rural parts of the State. This tie-up will help us to service customers in areas where BSNL does not have its own optic fibre network. We will use the OFC network of Cable TV operators to provide high-speed Internet access with speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This tie-up will be on a revenue sharing basis and we will add more operators in the next phase’, said Dr Mathew.
BSNL is also planning a range of new initiatives like Camera Surveillance Solutions and participation in the recently announced Smart City projects – Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The camera surveillance solutions will be initially rolled out in Kollam and Thrissur in association with Kerala Police.
“BSNL will set up 1070 BSNL 4G Plus Wi-Fi hotspots in rural exchanges across the State with Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) aid within the next six months as part of its expansion plans to reach out to rural customers. Users will be able to download 4GB data per month free through these hot spots. A total of 140 Wi-Fi (BSNL 4G Plus) sites with 418 Access Points are already working with Mobile Data offload facility in prominent places in Kerala”, he added.
BSNL has set an ambitious target of crossing 1 Crore mobile customer base in Kerala by October 1st this year, up from its existing 96 lakhs. Intensive efforts are on to link all the BSNL mobile customers with their Aadhaar numbers as per the Supreme Court instructions in this regard.
