Trivandrum: Public sector telecom service provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has created history with an important milestone of crossing one crore mobile customer base in its Kerala circle. It was in July this year that BSNL Kerala Circle set an ambitious target of crossing one crore mobile subscribers by October 1st.
According to Dr S Jyothi Sankar, GM EB/S&M, Kerala Telecom Circle, as on October 12, 2017; the mobile Home Location Register (HLR) of Kerala circle has crossed the one crore mark. 1,00,00,061 connections to be precise. As on July 31st, BSNL Kerala Circle had 96 lakhs mobile customers when it decided to target the one crore mark to coincide with the World Telecom Day.
Technically, the Home Location Register (HLR) is the main database of permanent subscriber information for a mobile network. The HLR is an integral component of CDMA (code division multiple access), TDMA (time division multiple access), and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) networks. Maintained by the subscriber’s home carrier (or the network operator where the user initiated the call), the HLR contains pertinent user information, including address, account status, and preferences. The HLR interacts with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC), which is a switch used for call control and processing. The MSC also serves as a point-of-access to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN – the fixed network). It may be noted that BSNL offers services across GSM and CDMA networks.
According to P T Mathew, Chief General Manager, BSNL Kerala circle; though several customers had been porting-out of BSNL, the number of those porting-in to BSNL from other networks, as well as new customers were keeping the customer base of BSNL going upwards. “We are offering competitive plans. Moreover, customers have more trust in BSNL because it is a public sector unit. In order to attract more customers and achieve the target, it has announced a host of voice and data offers. Kerala is also one of the fastest growing States for BSNL as far as data usage is concerned.”
The BSNL Kerala Telecom circle also includes the Lakshadweep islands.
