Digital News Media Federation takes off in Kerala


Trivandrum: Digital News Media Federation Kerala, an association of news portal organisations included in the Media List of the Information & Pubic Relations Department (I&PRD), Government of Kerala, was launched today by Shri K C Joseph, Minister for I&PRD.

Inaugurating the association at a function organised at Trivandrum Press Club, the Minister said, “The online media including the social media has tremendous potential to influence public opinion in important matters and that brings a lot of responsibility to the online media players. It is heartening to see that the online media has a strong presence in Kerala and this was part of the gradual transition from print to electronic media.” The Minister also promised all possible help and support from I&PRD to this sector.

In his address, P P James, President, Trivandrum Press Club remarked that the launch of the Digital News Media Federation Kerala was very important as it comes at a time when the traditional media and the new media was coming together in the form of convergence. He also asked the new media not to sensationalise the news so as to get more hits and said that the new media should follow the same code of conduct that is prevalent for the traditional media.

Binoy Viswam, former Minister; Siby Kattampally, District Committee President of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ); and Thiruvallam Bhasi, Editor of Australia based Indian Malayali offered felicitations. P V Murukan, President, DNMF & Editor, welcomed the guests and S Sulphikar, Secretary, DNMF & Editor, gave the vote of thanks.

The Digital News Media Federation (DNMF) Kerala has been formed to bring the unorganised online news media websites / organisations including stand alone ventures under a single roof. As of now, there are 26 such portals / organisations which are included in the I&PRD Media List and they are the members of DNMF Kerala.
