Kollam to host Malayalam WikiSangamotsavam on April 28-29


Kollam: WikiSamgamotsavam, the annual conference of Malayalam Wikimedians and the general public interested in free software movement will be held in Kollam on April 28-29, 2012. The Malayalam Wiki (ml.wikipedia.org) is the Malayalam language edition of Wikipedia, the free and publicly editable online encyclopedia and was launched on December 21, 2002. The project is the leading Wikipedia among other South East Asian language Wikipedias in various quality matrices. It has grown to be a wiki containing more than 23,000 articles as of April 2012.

The conference will be inaugurated by Dr. V N Rajashekhara Pillai, Vice Chairman, Council for Science and Technology, Kerala at the District Panchayat Hall in Kollam. Barry Newstead, Chief Global Development Officer, Wikimedia Foundation will deliver the keynote address. Dr. B Iqbal, former Vice Chancellor, Kerala University; Anvar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School Project & ViCTERS Educational Channel and Dr. Achuthsankar S Nair, Director, Centre for Bioinformatics, Kerala University are the other dignitaries addressing the audience in this two day conference.

According to a release from the Organising Committee, the second day of WikiSangamotsavam will feature a panel discussion on ‘Copyrights of Government Documents: Freedom of Knowledge’ by experts in this field. Wiki-Workshops for the public and a parallel Wiki-Conference for school children will also be held during the event. Around 30 research papers on a variety of subjects under four tracks – Community, Technology, Knowledge and Outreach – will be presented by Wikimedians and other experts in parallel venues. Paper presentations on e-Malayalam, free and open knowledge, copyright and cyber-freedom are the highlights of the conference this year.
