Kochi: Dr. Neil Gershenfeld, Director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Centre for Bits and Atoms (CBA), who pioneered the concept of Fabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs), today visited the Startup Village to discuss setting up of a Fab Lab at the incubator.
Fab Labs serve as a technical prototyping platform for innovations by students, thus encouraging entrepreneurship development at the grass root level. Fab Labs are increasingly being adopted by schools and colleges across the world, offering its students state-of-the-art facility for digital fabrication and computation.
CBA is setting up two Fab Labs in Kerala in partnership with the Government of Kerala; one at the Startup Village and another at the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram. Neil’s visit was to oversee the progress of the implementation of the facility.
The facility comprises off-the-shelf, industrial-grade fabrication and electronics tools, connected with open source software and programs.
