MLAs turn Hi-Tech

Tvm: All 141 MLAs of the Kerala Legislative Assembly got a brand new branded laptop today. Chief Minister Shri V S Achuthanandan handed over the first laptop to the Opposition Leader, Shri Oommen Chandy at a function held at the Niyamasabha. Chandy said that the legislators should rise to the occasion and make use of this facility to serve the people better.

Speaker  Shri K Radhakrishnan presented the CM with a laptopn. He told that it is yet to be decided if the legislators would be charged for the computers. “We have not decided on that. At the end of the tenure of this assembly (May 2011), may be after allowing for depreciation, we might levy a small amount. That is yet to be decided”.

Training in using the laptops would be given to the members, if required. While printers have not been given along with the laptops, the MLAs have been asked to forward requests for wireless internet connection. The laptops have been loaded with free software instead on the conventional proprietary software. The LDF government in Kerala is a big proponent of FOSS.

Well, this is yet another e-initiative of the Government. The government wants the MLAs to be hi-tech and use them for better governance but only time would tell that.
