Kozhikode: People of Kozhikode got a New Year gift to tide over their household jobs. The ‘Swabhiman’ service-on-call scheme to access skilled labour was launched yesterday.
An initiative of the Kozhikode District Administration, the project has a call centre at the Collectorate where consumers can call for their needs. They can also send an SMS or log to the Swabhiman website to request for a skilled worker. Coconut plucking, electrical, plumbing, electronic goods repair, refrigerator & AC maintenance, gas stove repair and carpentry are some of the services available now.
Swabhiman is the brainchild of District Collector P B Salim in an attempt to mitigate the city’s skilled labour shortage. According to him, Swabhimaan, is a well-defined integrated software solution based on the twin-concepts of Employment Generation and making available service of skilled personnel for the household needs. Incidentally, Kozhikode Collectorate was one of the winners of the first Kerala State e-Governance Awards in 2009 for IT enabled citizen centric services. About 140 workers have taken training and registered with Swabhiman till now and most of them are coconut tree climbers, a job which is in big demand in the cities.
When a call is placed to the call centre on 0495-2372666, the customer service representative will take request including address on the Swabhiman website and identify the skilled personnel, closest to the caller’s location. The caller will get a confirmation SMS after the representative coordinates with the skilled worker to ensures his availability. The service will be made available within an hour of receiving the request.
Consumers can send an SMS to 9446460600 as in the ‘SR<space>Service Code<space>Location format. The rates are Rs.100 for a house visit with Rs.50 extra for travel expense. For coconut climbing, it’s Rs.10 per tree with minimum Rs.100 per visit.
Swabhiman was launched by the State Minister for Industries and Commerce, Shri Elamaram Kareem and State Minister for Forest, Wildlife and Housing Shri Binoy Vishwam. The website has been designed and developed by the National Informatics Centre in Kozhikode.
