FOSS training for Kerala Police


Tvm: As part of promoting FOSS in Kerala, the Kerala State IT Mission conducted a training programme for Kerala Police. A five day FOSS training was held during the last week for the employees of Police Department at Police Training College, Thycaud in Trivandrum.

The training programme for the first batch of 60 police personnel by the FOSS experts included areas like Open Office, Internet and Email, Advanced Training in Linux OS, Malayalam Computing and Joomla Content Management Framework. The training for the Police Department also included maintenance and troubleshooting in hardware and software.

C Rajagopal IPS, Principal, Police Training College, described this training as a free gift from the IT Mission and hoped that all the participants would make the best use of the training programme.

Dr. Rathan Kelkar IAS, Director, KSITM said that the IT Mission was happy to be associated with training programmes to propagate and promote FOSS among government employees in Kerala. He talked about the pilot training programme in FOSS at Government Secretariat and added that over 100 employees have been trained so far. Training is also on for college teachers of Kerala and Kannur Universities with the support of Government of India. He also spelt out the efforts being undertaken for enhancing crime tracking through e-governance.

V B Sukesan, SP – Telecommunication, said that though other training programmes have been given to the police personnel, this was the first training in Free Software. The Telecommunications wing has around 4000 computers for the benefit of its employees who have qualifications ranging from ITI to B Tech. The services of the first batch would be utilised to train other employees, he added.

Jayaraj N, Course Director, CATFOSS and A K Udhayabanu, Dy SP- Telecommunication, were among those present for the programme.
