Thiruvalla: The curtains came down on the eight edition of the BarCamp Kerala (BCK) at Thiruvalla with some good presentations and great networking. BCK 8 was held at the Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies (MACFAST) in Thiruvalla.
The BarCamp started with a session on Statistical Machine Translation Basics by Deepak P. This was followed by a very interesting presentation on Mobile Web by Shwetank Dixit from Opera. A session by Deepa Easwar from Artin Dynamics, a company based in Technopark, threw some light on the need to save energy in our working environment. Aravind Jose spoke about the new and emerging web trends in Kerala while mentioning about his venture ‘Kottayam Pattanam.com’. Some of the other informative sessions were Y Perl? by Alan Haggai Alavi and some very useful tips for Entrepreneurs by Ivin Gancius.
About 60 techies and geeks from all across Kerala attended the BarCamp. The youngest to attend BCK were three school students from Kozhikode who are avid bloggers.
A sumptuous yet simple lunch was sponsored by Macfast. The infrastructure and facilities there was very impressive. Fr. Abraham Mulamootil, Principal, Macfast spoke about the various initiatives at Macfast including an industry interface programme that encourages the ‘earn while you learn’ concept. The BarCamp Kerala 8 concluded with the resovle to meet again after three months.
BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Kerala has the distinction of conducting the most number of BarCamps in India in a year for the last 2 years.
