Kochi to host International Conference on Public Software


Kochi: An international conference on ‘Software in Public Sector, with focus on Public Education’ will be jointly conducted by UNESCO / UN Solution Exchange ICTD unit and [email protected] Project of Government of Kerala in Kochi during May 27 – 29, 2010.

The conference will be an opportunity to present case studies on adoption of Public Sector Software with a special focus on education to ensure public ownership, transparency, sharing and independent use of public software. The conference starts with field visits to selected four government schools in Kochi to have a hands-on experience of ICT enabled education being implemented in schools. Shri M A Baby, Minister for Education and Culture would formally inaugurate the conference at a function to be presided over by Armoogum Parasuramen, Director, UNESCO.

There will be sessions on Guidelines on Public Sector Software, Public Sector Policies and Initiatives and Experiences on Free and Open Source Software in South Asia. There would also be a session by [email protected] to detail the activities till date.

This International Conference is a follow up to the National workshop in Bangalore in February 2010 which came up with the document ‘Guiding principles for policy on software for the Public Sector’. The Bangalore workshop highlighted the need to involve the countries of this region to take the initiative forward in order to enhance the current practices of government software policy and ICT in education.

According to Anvar Sadath, Executive Director, [email protected], “The venue has been identified here, since Kerala is the role-model for other states in successfully implementing ICT enabled education in the schools under [email protected] Project of General Education Department by using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)”.

The workshop would also provide inputs for the ‘Guiding principles for public sector software’, review resource material for OSS in education and finalise the content and materials for a website on Public software for the South Asian region which would be launched at the end of the event.
