Tvm: The 9th Meet up of the leading online Malayalam social network, Koottam, was held today in Thiruvananthapuram. The Koottam Kerala Meet 2010 was inaugurated by noted poetess Sugathakumari. About 150 Kootam members from different parts of the world attended this one day get-together.
Speaking at the event, Sugathakumari teacher said it was good to know that people are using Internet as a forum to interact with fellow Malayalees though she admitted that she was not on the Internet. She applauded the Koottam network for its social activities and for keeping alive the traditions of Kerala across the world.
Koottam is an exclusive social media networking site for those who interact in Malayalam. Started in 2008 by Jyothi Kumar, a Dubai based Entrepreneur along with his childhood friend Jaya Mohan; an IT Advisor in US, with 65 members; the network today has over 2 lakh members from 121 countries. About 50% of them are from the Middle East.
Talking to Kerala IT News, Jyothi Kumar said, “Being away from home for long, we felt the need for an online social media community in Malayalam for expatriates from Kerala. A place where like minded people can come together, interact and do something good for the society while getting the support of online friends and well wishers in places away from home. Today Koottam has become a second home for most of us”.
Apart from meeting new friends, today’s get-together is an occasion for many to meet their online friends in person. Koottam has taken up seven charitable projects in the last two years and the eight was launched today. The network has also been instrumental in several marriages among the community members.
This is the second time the Koottam members are meeting in Kerala after the Kochi meet in 2009. This is apart from seven meet ups in Saudi and UAE. Dr. Jayan Damodaran, Dhanalakshmi, Alby and Devu are some of the Koottam members who took the initiative to organise this meet.
