In a release, Suneet S Tuli, CEO, DataWind commented, “Our main aim is to bring the Internet into the hands of an average individual with its breakthrough technology.” The UbiSurfer offers DataWind’s revolutionary free-usage model, which eliminates the complexity of getting online. “With the UbiSurfer you pay for the device not the usage. For the average user, there are no monthly fees, airtime tariffs, contracts or recurring fees”, he adds. At a price of Rs.7,999/-, the company expects this ‘aam aadmi’s netbook’ to change the dynamics of the mobile internet device market in India.

The UbiSurfer comes bundled with 30 hours per month of free internet access for the first full year useable across India.  For heavy users, unlimited internet is available for Rs.99/- per month. The UbiSurfer is supported by DataWind’s patented data compression / acceleration technology, which allows end-users to access web pages at high speeds even over slow network connections. As per the information provided by the company, the UbiSurfer delivers web pages in less than 7 seconds at all locations in India that have a mobile phone network.
Weighting merely 700 gm, this netbook is also a practical computer that comes pre-loaded with the Microsoft Windows CE 6.0 operating system and Softmaker Office Suite. With Microsoft Windows CE, the new UbiSurfer boots-up in ten seconds, and applications launch instantly, providing consumers an excellent system with the familiarity of a PC. Windows CE is a pre-emptive real-time operating system that delivers a compelling user experience.

The product is available through their toll free number 1800-180-2180. So basically, a customer has to call up in this line and place an order and the product would be delivered at the doorstep. DataWind is in the process of tying up with large format retail stores and this liaison is slated to be closed in less than a month from now. From then on, the UbiSurfer would be available in the retail outlets in Kerala.
