Malta: Even as the SmartCity Kochi project hangs in limbo, Tecom has announced the launch of their SmartCity Malta project. Both the projects were started almost simultaneously by the Dubai based Tecom Investment Group, the promoters of the SmartCity projects.
The first state-of-the-art building, SCM 01 at SmartCity Malta in Ricasoli was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi on October 10, 2010. Ahmad Bin Byat, CEO, Dubai Holding; Abdullatif Al Mulla, CEO, Tecom Investment Group and Fareed Abdulrahman, CEO, SmartCity were among those present on the occasion.
Launched ten years ago, the Dubai Internet City was the first of Tecom’s business parks. SmartCity Malta is their first successful overseas project after the failure of the SmartCity Kochi project to take off. SmartCity Malta is being developed into a major new centre of excellence for knowledge based companies. It is expected to make a significant contribution to Malta’s economy, by opening up new development avenues, specifically in the IT and IT-enabled services sectors. SmartCity Malta has the most advanced and reliable ICT and power infrastructure in Malta.
SCM 01 is made up of 12,000 sq. mtrs of smart office space and will be home to international, regional and local companies. Infrastructure works on the entire site have been completed facilitating the construction of the subsequent phases. The infrastructure design was specifically planned at achieving best results in terms of efficiency, sustainability and life cycle analysis. This event marks the end of Phase One A. The next phase will consist of four additional buildings that will provide additional office and retail space.
