Workshop promotes ICT use for excellence in higher education


Tvm: A one day workshop on ‘Enabling excellence in higher education and technology through ICT and NPTEL Resources’ was organised by Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), IIT, Madras and Eduworld Sciencenet at the Technopark in Trivandrum last week. The workshop was attended by more than 100 teachers from various colleges in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Prof. Venkat Rangan, VC, Amrita University, Coimbatore, gave an insightful talk on the emerging technologies in e-learning and how technological development has evolved over the years. He emphasised the need for a new way of thinking to make maximum benefit out of emerging technologies to enhance the quality of learning process in schools and colleges.

Prof. Mangal Sunder, National Web Coordinator, NPTEL, IIT-Madras gave an overview about the NPTEL initiative of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, GoI. Under this programme, over 320 faculty members in the IITs and IISc have developed content in about 230 courses catering to the undergraduate engineering curriculum. This content is available in the form of Recorded Video Lectures (RVL) and as supplementary learning materials for regular engineering college courses in web-accessible format.

Prof. K P Isaac, Member Secretary, AICTE discussed about aspects of quality in education and future challenges in engineering education. Dr. Santhanaraman, Director, NIC Kerala, spoke about the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and how it is going to transform the way education is imparted in educational institutions by increased collaboration.

G Brahmaiah, DGM, BSNL Bangalore gave inputs on the National Mission on Education through IT and the services of BSNL to universities and colleges. He suggested that all the colleges and universities should make use of the assistance provided by the central government for providing quality bandwidth at highly subsidized costs to educational institutions.

Prof. Elizabeth Sherly, Director, IIITM-K and Prof. V S Jayakumar, Eduworld Sciencenet also addressed the gathering. Presentations and discussions on various ways by which NPTEL resources and IT can used for enhancing the quality of education in colleges were held during the workshop. This workshop was organised to develop an ecosystem and to empower the academic community to share and exchange educational resources enabling effective utilisation of such valuable resources to reach higher levels of knowledge and academic excellence.
