Tvm: The revamped web portal of the Kerala Government (kerala.gov.in) and the 14 District portals were launched today by Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy. The new office of the Web & New Media Division of the Information & Public Relations Department (I&PRD) at the Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram was also inaugurated on this occasion.
The portals have been designed and developed by the Trivandrum based Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT). The content is being managed and updated by the Web & New Media Division with manpower from C-DIT. A major change during the revamp of these portals has been the migration of these portals from proprietary software (HTML) to free and open source software (FOSS) based content management system (CMS). Information about Ministers, Key Contacts, Tenders, Government Orders (GO) & Circulars, Documents, Helpline, links to E-Services, etc are some of the highlights of the new web portal.
According to R Venugopal, Information Officer – Web & New Media, “A major challenge was the consolidation of information which was earlier spread across different Government websites. The portal was completely revamped and now it has been made user friendly and comprehensive. I am sure we would be able to do well-timed updates with a more centralised structure now.”
To ensure smooth and timely updation at the department level, a Nodal Officer (not below the rank of Additional Secretary) to be assisted by two other Officers from each Department will be given training in using the CMS so that they can upload the content / documents / GOs / Circulars directly. But unless the web portal is integrated with IDEAS, the Kerala Government Secretariat file tracking system, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results.
Shri K C Joseph, Minister for I&PRD; T J Mathew IAS, Secretary, I&PRD and A Firoz, Director, I&PRD were among those present on the occassion.
