SmartCity Kochi project on right course: Chief Minister

Tvm: Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy today clarified that the SmartCity Kochi project was on the right track and the first phase will be completed in 18 months. The inauguration of the SmartCity Kochi Pavilion – the offices for the Administrative and Project Management team, is scheduled for June 09, 2012. The foundation stone for the 30 lakh sq. ft. buildings under first phase would also be laid the same day. He was reacting to some media reports that the project is facing inordinate delay and would take at least 10 years to complete.

Interacting with the media after a special Cabinet meeting, the CM said that the project is progressing as per the time frame set in the agreement signed by the Government with Tecom, the Dubai based promoters of the SmartCity Kochi project. The next meeting of the Board of Directors would be held after the inauguration of the Pavilion, the same day. The CM also explained that the issue with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) over erection of transmission towers in the project area has been resolved in principle and would be discussed during the Board Meeting.

According a release from the company in April, 2012; the SmartCity Kochi Pavilion was to be ready by first week of May. However, when the work on SmartCity Pavilion started in October 2011, it was to be completed in four months, that is by February 2012. The Sales Pavilion will assist the marketing of the project to international and national stake holders. This delay has resulted in the company missing the promotional activities for SmartCity Kochi, planned from March. Now the company hopes to piggyback the ‘Emerging Kerala’ event to promote the project.

Ever since the project was conceived, the work on the SmartCity Kochi project has moved at snails pace. It may be recalled that the SmartCity Kochi project was salvaged in February 2011. Seven years after the SmartCity Kochi project was initiated and almost four years after the foundation stone was first laid, the construction work of the Rs.2,000 crore project was finally flagged off on October 08, 2011.
