Trivandrum: Outstanding effort over the past few years by various cultural institutions under the Kerala government has earned them extra budgetary allocation. Minister for Culture, Shri K C Joseph said this here today at the launch of a website of the State Department of Culture.
The Minister said the heads of such organisations have had the freedom to take forward initiatives and make their own decisions – something that has helped each institution ‘earn great merit’. “Thanks to their efforts, for the first time, the budget has set aside more funding for the Department of Culture.”
The website keralaculture.org brings together the history, performance, music, dance and more from Kerala. The bilingual site provides a quick, comprehensive and authentic reference to Kerala’s art forms, its literature and unique architecture, and brings under one umbrella the different institutions, ranging from the various Akademis, museums and the archives.
“The site is aimed at the Malayali diaspora and for anyone looking for information on the ocean of culture that is Kerala,” said Cultural Affairs Secretary, Rani George. “The various organisations under the department have their own websites, but this is the first time that a comprehensive site bringing them all together has been designed.”
The easy-to-navigate site bears various headers – culture department, language / literature, art forms, music, festivals, cinema and gallery – which go into further detail in each of the topics. The site’s ‘Gallery’ features shots of festivals, cuisine, religious institutions, art forms, handicrafts and jewellery.
The audio galleries showcases the rich cultural variety in the state and also serves to pique a listener’s curiosity, with music from the various cultural forms, apart from religious, ritual, tribal, festival and folk music. The video gallery takes viewers on short tours of monuments, museums, festivals and martial arts, among other things.
A calendar of events provides a ready reckoner of key cultural events around the state on any particular date. The site is accessible on mobiles, tabs and computers. Also on the anvil are pages on handicrafts to showcase state-wide artisans and an online quiz.
Department of Culture Director, Santhosh Kumar was also present at the function.
