Trivandrum: Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), formerly [email protected], is all set to conduct ‘Free Software Install Fests’ on 2nd October in all the 14 districts across the State in the wake of Software Freedom Day celebrations.
The latest version of [email protected] GNU/Linux would be freely installed in computers at the Install Fest. The [email protected] GNU/Linux based Operating System features various applications worth over Rs.1.5 Lakhs including Operating System, Office packages (Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database), DTP, Graphics and Imaging software, Sound recording, Video editing, Animation packages, Integrated Development Environment (IDEs) for programming, Web Server & Database server, Geographical Information System (GIS), etc. This also contains major Educational software like Geogebra, Phet, Stellarium, Kalzium, Marble, Razmol, Gplates, Gcomprise, Pysio Game, Dr Geo, Celestia, etc.
The ‘Install Fest’ is being organized at the District Offices of KITE. ‘Install Fest’ would also see sessions on Free Software by experts, Q&A sessions and seminars. Students of the ‘Hi-School Kuttikootam’ group from selected schools would be given specific training during Install Fest.
Software Freedom Day aims at creating a public awareness on the benefits and scope of using quality Free Software applications in all domains of life. The State Government had already issued guidelines insisting the use of only FOSS applications in all schools and Government offices. Kerala Education department through [email protected] is considered to be the world’s largest free software deployment initiative in the education sector.
“[email protected] (KITE) would not be able to come up with such extensive ICT education programme if the proprietary software was in place and as a social responsibility part we are taking up this big task from the Gandhi Jayanthi Day. As a continuing process we would be conducting similar programmes in each of the 163 Education Sub-Districts in the State and then at each school”, said K Anvar Sadath, Vice Chairman & ED, KITE.
